About flame retardant filament

Discover 3D printing with flame retardant filament. In this collection, we offer thermally stable filament materials that you can print with your FDM/FFF 3D printer. Flame retardant materials are used for many applications in a range of industries. Flame retardant materials can be found in objects and parts such as casing for electronics or appliances where the focus is to diminish the chances of a fire starting and especially limit the spreading or growth of a fire.

In some cases, flame retardant materials are required for certain manufactured parts to be safely approved for usage. Aerospace, automotive, and construction sectors largely benefit from a high-performance material that ensures safety and time for evacuation in the case of combustion. Risks are therefore highly minimized and protection is ensured through the use of flame retardant materials. The flame retardant filament not only shields fire but has a number of other important qualities such as PEEK filament known for its outstanding chemical resistance and layer adhesion abilities. Our PEKK filament has special tribological qualities and high dimensional stability. We also have PEI Ultem filament with impressive chemical resistance as well as a high glass transition temperature. Get to know all of our flame-retardant high-performance filament materials, each with their own unique specifications and possibilities.

The filament materials in this collection are premium quality materials that can be used on an industrial level. With professional material comes professional 3D objects and parts. Real Filament provides high-quality and tested industrial materials for the best printing experience.

Printing flame retardant filament

The flame retardant thermoplastics are high-temperature materials that print between 235°C-450°C. Make sure you have a 3D printer that is able to print in high temperatures. Having a heated build chamber is a requirement to avoid the print from cooling down too quickly. Furthermore, strong materials can be abrasive to your 3D printer’s nozzle so be sure to use a hardened steel nozzle or a ruby tip nozzle to prevent damage. While you print high-temperature materials, the material will give off smells that should be able to escape the room that the 3D printer is located in. Please ensure thorough ventilation of the space that you will be printing in. The printing instructions can be found listed in the specific flame retardant filament pages. We do advise that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions as well as perform test prints to discover the ideal settings for your 3D printer since all 3D printers are unique. A lot of the flame retardant materials are known to already have great adhesion qualities, however, the use of additional adhesives can guarantee the best print quality.

Adhesion for flame retardant filament

We recommended using additional adhesion for flame retardant materials. Do check the specific flame retardant materials to see which adhesive best matches the retardant filament. PEI sheets are extremely convenient to use as a build surface and transfer heat from the heated bed, providing proper adhesion for a printed model. Kapton tape is another good adhesive option and has great mechanical stability. Sprays are a simple adhesive and an effective solution to avoid warping. Another wonderful adhesive is Magigoo Pro HT which has been specifically developed for 3D printing in very high temperatures.

Storing flame retardant filament

Store your flame retardant filament correctly and maintain the quality and shelf life. We recommended keeping your flame retardant filament in a drying box. With silica gel bags you can ensure that no moisture will enter the storage container.

Frequently asked questions

Is 3D filament flammable?

Most 3D filaments are flammable, especially oil-based filament such as ABS filament. Some filament materials have fire retardant properties such as TPU filament and PETG filament. There are specially developed high-quality flame retardant filaments created to hinder and stop the spread of a fire. These are 3D filament materials such as PEEK, PPSU, and PEI.

Can 3D printing cause fires?

Electrical fires are caused by 3D printers when the wires or different components are overheated and the insulation catches fire. It is unusual for a 3D printer to catch fire and with the right preventative measures, you can avoid this. Do not leave your 3D printer unattended and ensure that you frequently perform 3D printer maintenance and keep your firmware up to date.

How can I create an inflammable 3D print?

An inflammable 3D print can be achieved through printing with flame retardant filament. Objects printed with flame retardant filament will have thermal stability, highly minimizing the possibility of catching fire and spreading it. Flame retardant filament like PEEK, PEI, and PPSU will actively prevent fires from starting and delay them from growing further.

What 3D filament is inflammable?

Printing with a flame retardant filament will greatly eliminate the chances of catching fire or spreading. We advise having a look at the flame retardant filament materials which have been designed to have properties that will contain a fire. PEEK, PPSU, and PEI are all filaments that are fire retardants.
